Nomination and Voting Process Explained

How are dances nominated?  How did the Line Star State Awards come to be?

The Texas onLine Dance Mission is a Facebook group founded in 2020 for the purpose of connecting the Texas line dance community during the Worldwide Covid Pandemic.  Something beautiful originated out of a very dark historical time and has persisted ever since.  This private Facebook group currently has 1,300 members and filters new members to try to keep the content related to the Texas line dance community.

Starting in 2022, the Texas onLine Dance Mission began polling members on a monthly basis to find out what new dances were being taught/learned around the state.  This serves a multi-purpose... give instructors a way to share ideas, give line dancers a platform to promote dances that they currently loved, and keep the dancers around the state talking with each other (and hopefully keep us all on the same page).  

In 2023, a lightbulb moment occurred, and it was time to put all this data to work.  Inspiration came from the Crystal Boot Awards (supported by linedancerweb and the Line Dance Foundation), as well as other countries' line dance award processes.  Why not take our top 10 voted dances from each month's poll results and collect them in a "Top Dances List" throughout the year?  These dances serve as the nominated dances for each level's dance of the year.  Once all the top monthly dances are collected at the end of the calendar year, an online vote is conducted for our Texas dance community to decide the top 5 dances (one for each level) of the year.  The annual online vote occurs in January, while the results are announced in February.  For the years 2022-2025, our results were always announced LIVE on the Cross The Line Dancing Houston YouTube channel.  Starting in 2026, the dances which will be nominated and voted on will be celebrated during an in-person awards event called the Line Star State Awards.  The first one will be held in February 2027, honoring the dances of the year for 2026.

Eligible voting and poll participants include only Texas residents and/or dancers who have attended a Texas line dance event or convention within the past year or who are registered to attend within the upcoming year.

Our in-person event will have a limited capacity in 2027, thus will begin with private invitations to Texas instructors.  We're hoping to increase our event capacity in the years to come.  Thank you for your support!
